Kororā Cam

In late 2024 Waiheke Local Board generously funded us for signage, a presentation by Karen Saunders, and a trail camera, all in the aid of kororā awareness.

The trail cam was finally installed in June 2026 on private property at Home Bay. (Thank you Amanda Frecker!)
We initially wanted to ascertain which direction the kororā were heading in to access their nesting spot, which we’ve managed to establish. The camera has captured little blue penguins heading back and forth from their nest area, but also a busy night when they were evidently lugging nesting material around early in the morning, which is pretty cool. The camera has also snapped pāteke and oyster-catchers out and around in the wee smalls, as well as pūtangitangi and everyone’s favourite bird, pūkeko. I’m really thrilled at the results.

Here a a few of my choice pics.. June 24th was evidently a busy early morning for a couple of kororā.

Two kororā heading out in search of nesting material.
Kororā with a beakful of nesting material.
Serious nesting material in the form of a big stick.
Oystercatcher selfie at 2am.
Two pātake!!
Two Pūtangitangi almost certainly making a loud honking sound.
