Ian Scherger

Ian, Lisa, Harry & Sophie Scherger – 1 Jane York Place, Woody Bay. Bought section off Humphrey Beale in 1985 after seeing it once after trying to buy another section first – Humphrey told me he had sold it to “son – someone with more money than you”. Camped on it at first with frequent cattle visitors and the odd sheep. Had a house designed by Dean Wylie for the site in 1994 and built it in 1995 using island resident builder Richard Rose. He did a great job as during winter it rained for about 3 months solid whilst he was trying to get the roof on. Around 1996, me and a mate Duncan Ramsey MacDonald got Warren to ship us and around 200 seedling trees over and we planted out the whole section and corner in a day. Up until that time the island and “Woody” Bay was pretty bare apart from a few really old Pohutakawa trees. Post that experience I’ve learnt that I should just ask John McKenzie about trees and that new/old residents and the Stacy/Steve effort are making the island amazing with plants and trees.
